I have had dogs as part of most of my life. My Parents showed and bred Pembroke Corgi’s and as a youngster it wasn’t long before I started showing dogs as a junior handler. I eventually got my own corgi ‘Jasper’ who I showed and also successfully competed in obedience trials.
However my love has always been for the wonderful Golden Retriever. In 1995 the time was right and Paul and I and our two children got our first Golden ‘Bernie’ from the late Margaret Evans of Vanrose Golden Retrievers. Margaret Evans was one of the first, most influential breeders in New Zealand. She brought Goldens out from the UK when she immigrated and also during the years she lived here. I was fortunate to be able to learn a lot from Margaret in my early years of Goldens and showed some of her dogs for her.
Although Bernie was not a great show dog he was a wonderful family member and everything a ‘Goldie’ should be. Bernie passed away at the great age of 16 years.
Our foundation bitch “Vanrose April Love” came along in 1996 and our first litter in 1998. From this litter came our first show champion “Ch Vanrose Joint Affaire” (bred jointly with Margaret Evans).
“Kavandale Golden Retrievers” was established in 2000. The kennel name came about from my name (‘Ka’ ‘van’) and the valley we live in (‘dale’), making it truly unique.
Our breeding program is very selective with all care taken to produce top quality, true to type, sound Golden Retrievers with superb temperaments. We breed only occasionally, about one litter a year usually. We are always aiming to improve our Goldens. We have blended our lines with bloodlines from top English and Swedish kennels to further enhance our Goldens.
